Ok, I am rooted by way of Easy Root...seems to work fine as all I was really concerned with doing at the time was getting WifiTether to work so as not to have to pay Verizon additional money for the 1 or 2 times a year I might use the wifi hotspot feature.

Now, here is where I am at...I want to add some additional apps that arent on the Market. I assume I can download these to my home PC and then transfer them over to my X via usb. What exactly do I need to do then? What "handles" these files in order for me to be able to install them and run them? Do I need an additional piece of software on the phone?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks in advance!

Oh and as a back-up question to my first above...

If I am rooted on 2.1, will I be able to receive the OTA update for 2.2? The reaon I asked is I downloaded and installed Rom Manager and happened to notice it said "my current ROM is blocking OTA"...any ideas?

Agai, thanks for any info...

the programs you want to be installed have to be .apk files for android to install tehm. and in settings you need to check install from 3rd party sources (or similar)

if you didnt install a custom recovery, you will get the 2.2 update notification. did you install a custom rom after rooting?

.APK files..are they in any type of container that I need additional software for? I am thinking they are not, but coming from WinMo 6.5 I just want to be certain before I start dropping New ROMS. Thanks for the info!

As far as a new ROM, no, I havent flashed from stock as of yet. I want the OTA update, which is why I have waited as far as flashing to a custom ROM...I want to see what official Froyo looks/acts like...

no additional software (other than a file explorer - id say go with astro file manager)

just navigate to the apk and click it and it will install.

if you dont have a ROM nor a custom recovery u can get 2.2. but why wait? its in Rescue Squad Files (in my sig) - you can apply the FRG01B the the latest FRG22D as a manual update (save to root of the sdcard, rename to update.zip, and boot into recovery (holding x when powering on) and apply the update)

if you browse to the website that has the .apk file with your phone, you can install it directly as long as you just want it as an user app.

Thanks for all the replies...

Yes, I am on a Droid X...I can hold an "x" button down, but Swype will probably lose its mind....lol:)

I love this phone, but I am one of those "who just cant leave well enough alone"...I know the phone can do more than Motorola and Verizon wants us to think it can...:icon_evil:

Ok, as you can see from my sig on this post, i have figured out how to load apps without using the Market...thanks for the help!
