ROM question -newbie!

Hi all. I have a question about ROMs and themes. I've seen all these cool themes on here and have no idea how to get things done myself! I have rooted my phone successfully but am very confused about what things I can do with the phone. I have installed a few launchers and themes, but they've really not been working. I like having the banner on the bottom that has the phone, contacts, sms and browser. The themes that I've found don't have this and I wind up messing the whole look of the phone. I usually remove the theme and go back to LauncherPro. That is the only program that I've found that leaves that banner on the phone home screen. What am I doing wrong?

1, ADW does the same thing, you just have to turn it on in the settings.

2, Launcher Pro probably has the same settings, so any Launcher Pro theme you install would need the settings reset.

3, Are you installing themes for the D2?

4, Are you installing themes for your ROM?

5, Are you installing full themes or launcher themes?
