Reverse tethering?

I just got back from a trip to Asia. I didn't want to have my phone use data roaming and I didn't always have Wi-Fi but most of the day I had a wired network for my laptop. I'd like to have had my phone get mail, weather updates, etc. via "reverse tethering", hooking up the USB and having the phone share the laptop's wired network connection. Is that possible? (The computer is running XP and the phone is running Android 2.2.)

You could have used the laptops wifi to create an adhoc network and project the wifi out and connect that way. I've done it with my mac before. Don't know how it works on XP.
