replacing the stock keyboard

If I want to replace the stock keyboard with a "themed stock" keyboard from a theme (but don't want the whole theme) can I just push it (LatinIME.apk) to system/app with Root Explorer and overwrite the current one (and set permissions)?

For me... I used Android Commander and just deleted LatinIME.apk from system and then just copied the other to system. Worked like a charm. Gotta load keyboard like twice on the first use though (like when using HTC_IME for first time). But using adb should net the same result. I don't use Root Explorer... Android Commander does well enough for me.
