red dot on mail screen

If I knew what to search the forum for I would have instead of this new post.
On my mail screen, the personal mail client not the gmail one, I have a small red dot with a number in it. This is just above and to the right of the green plus sign. It had a 2 on it yesterday and now it has a 4. I have no unread messages, that was my first thought. I searched the documentation and found nothing.
Anyone have an idea what this means?

You started an email and canceled out. The mail software saved it as draft. Click on it and cancel it or send it
