quick ringer/notification silence?

This may be the dumbest question ever but I cant find the answer or figure it out. On my old phone when it rang i could hit the side key and it would immediatly silence. Is there a way to silence the driod quickly?

If I'm not mistaken the volume rocker does just that, it shuts the sound off.

Also, if you're wanting the volume on by default, but off for the current call, I've found that pressing the power button works.

that works for calls but not notifications...

I'm bumping every tread I can find on this subject... there has to be a solution...There has to be a way to silent an incoming notification with one touch of an external button... If i'm having a conversation with sombody I don't want to have to take my phone out of my pocket to silence my text song...
