Question about when to wipe phone...

I have seen so many threads talking about wiping the phone info...
just the cache....
need to wipe data....
do a system wipe....

Does someone mind explaining when you should and what should you wipe???

I have been on 2.0.1 ROMS the entire time, but have gone from
SholesMOD 2.0.1 to
Bugless Beast to
Sholes 2.0.5 and have stayed there since.

I have also made changes to themes using Metamorph, and changed the overall font through the Terminal method.
Everything seems ok, but I do get a Home FC sometimes when coming out of an app back to the home screen.

I did a cache wipe today and no FC since that. Is it necessary to wipe data or system?

Unless you're having problems or need space, there's really no reason to wipe.
