Problems rooting phone!

I downloaded and ran z4root as per the recommended procedure. Interestingly, the z4 app thinks that my phone has been rooted, but when I use a terminal app (ConnectBot), instead of seeing a # sign which indicates that the thing is actually rooted, I still see a $ sign instead! Is everything alright? I've recently been wondering if there's a way to reset the SYSTEM files to the factory defaults instead of just the user files (which the factory reset option on the phone does). Perhaps if my phone could get a clean start, I could successfully root the thing without having to deal with any potential ugly messes. Help! Any help that you guys can provide will be immensely appreciated!

FYI: I have GingerBread on my phone... Android 2.3

Z4root doesn't work on 2.2 and above (like your 2.3)...I'm not sure this will work but search for the gingerbreak.apk, I think its on xda forums and I'm also not sure it'll work on your particular phone whatever it is...if you wanna try one click rooting that may be your best bet
