phone sync-ing problem?

Just recently my Droid X started syncing something -- what I don't know -- and it's been syncing non-stop ever since. Right next to the 3G/WiFi icon. I tried pulling the battery and restart and still keeps syncing something. Not sure what. Any suggestions? Ideas? Anyone else having this issue?

Thanks in advance for any help!

I've been having this issue from time to time. Gmail won't sync for 24-36 hours at a time and then all of a sudden it'll work again. Are you having the same issues that I'm having in my SMS thread or the "Odd Problems" thread?

I'm not sure it is gmail that is doing the syncing...could be, but something is. Any way to tell for sure if that is what it is? Guess maybe not cause then could be able to resolve the problem I would suppose. Where are those threads you are speaking of Chuck_25?

Thanks.

Are you running a custom ROM at all? If so and it is a blur based rom (not CM7 or SSX), there is a part of the blur framework that has to do with backup assistant that can potentially cause problems. Here is a link to a thread I posted on a solution. (I am not responsible if you break something trying this.)

You may be able to see what it is by going into settings > accounts and then tap on each one to see if it has a sync icon next to it spinning. That would be your culprit. No guarantee it will show up there though. You can also uncheck the options and then enable them one at a time and see if one in particular does it. (note when you enable them, the icon will usually come up as it syncs quickly, but if one stays on for more than a few minutes, that is likely the culprit)

If you find the problem, post here and we can try to help you resolve it.

I am having the same problem with GroceryIQ. Continues to try to sync without completing the sync. Have sent several requests to Support at GroceryIQ without any response. Anybody else have the same problem?

I think I caught it. Last.fm may have been the culprint as I signed into my last.fm account through Accounts in addition to having the app. However when I first went in, it wasn't spinning under the settings but it still showed in the notification bar... I went through all other accounts...same thing, no spinning sync icon. I went back into last.fm for some reason and it wasn't spinning still. I went under the settings under the last.fm, everything looked fine...came back out and now it was giving the spinning icon. So I turned off sync contacts and the sync icon went away in the top. So, guess that answers that. Strange though.

Thanks everyone. Although that doesn't answer bcowan's GroceryIQ question. Maybe you can try something similar to what I did with last.fm?

D'oh! I spoke too soon. It's back again up in the notification bar...but it disappeared after I did that with last.fm for a good few minutes.

Ugh....

.....carry on.

I unchecked ALL of the sync options on all my gmail/google accounts under settings > accounts last night. The sync icon was still there at the top...it still is this morning and obviously none of my gmail accounts are showing any mail. So not sure what it is that is eternally syncing then?

Do you only have Google accounts in the accounts menu? Are there any other accounts listed for other apps? They may be the culprit.

You said you are stock, but not if you are running froyo or gingerbread. If running froyo, you can install spare parts from the market and go to battery history. Choose partial wake usage and see if anything shows more than a small bar. Also you can choose network usage and should be able to see what app is trying to sync constantly. If you see Android System as the culprit, it is likely Backup Assistant causing the issue.

I forgot to mention how to deal with gingerbread since it does not have battery history anymore. There is an app called PhoneUsage that will monitor what uses data on the phone. It only monitors 3g, so if you have wifi on, you will need to turn it off to test this. It also only starts monitoring when installed, so once you run it once, check it after at least an hour so the sample is not skewed by time as much.

Some settings to note for the app:
In settings menu, go to Advanced and check Update on Opening
On the data tab, press Period and choose today (otherwise the graph will be so small you can't see it)

The app shows how much data is used and below it has a color coded chart that shows which apps are using the data and what percentage of it they used. This should work in froyo too, but the other method will reveal if an app is keeping the phone from going into sleep mode.

Yea, I have other accounts but when I go to them it doesn't have any syncing icon in their menu there in settings. I have

Soundcloud
last.fm
Backup Assistant
Facebook
Funambol
mySpace
Photobucket
Twitter

These were all there before this started happening. That may not mean anything of course but it was the case. I am running Gingerbread as of Tuesday I was finally able to get the update. However before the update it was doing this and it still is today after the update.

I guess I misspoke, what I meant by stock was just that I wasn't running anything special aside from Launcher Pro...no ROMs or Rooted or anything like that. Spare parts doesn't work on Gingerbread I guess you are saying. I DL it anyways and it keeps force closing on me when I look at Battery Usage.

Spare parts will not show battery history on GB because moto removed it from the kernel.

With the other accounts there, you can try turning them off one by one to see if it stops, even if they do not currently indicate they are syncing. Or try the PhoneUsage app I posted to see what is using data.
