PDANET and tether .. speed

Wondering if you still get data if the tower does not yet support 3G? I would think so but just need to make sure. Also the data xfer will stop during a phone call correct? I assume I will most usually use the usb cable as it charges at the same time , but what is the speed on the bluetooth DUN connection at optimum? I had some issues rooted and am back stock now and just trying out pdanet to see if it is going to work consistently tethered.
