just got back from Canada ... used Airplane Mode to avoid roaming charges, and CoPilot for navigation ... the trick to using GPS for CoPilot navigation is to go off Airplane Mode for just a few seconds until GPS locks in, then go back to Airplane Mode and GPS will stay locked in ... it's an idiosyncrasy of the Motorola Droid design that it needs to go off Airplane mode just long enough to lock onto the GPS service ... a few seconds ... look for the steady GPS signal ... does not require actual data connectivity ... I also used CoPilot that way in the West Virginia Mountains where there is no data connectivity available, so that the Google navigation system didn't work either ... CoPilot is great but required map downloads, not entirely cheap, but worth it ...
One could also uncheck "Data Enable" in the network settings to avoid data costs and have both GPS and phone connection ... I was told that phone roaming in Canada does not cost anything - as opposed to very expensive data roaming ... but calls - per minute rates - are of course somewhat expensive in Canada ...
