New GMail multiselect

I just updated to the latest Gmail app. Now when I long press a message, a check mark appears in the upper left corner. However, I can't get it to select other emails by tapping them. Doing that just opens the emails. How do I use multi select?

Tap the square Letter or picture on the left of the email to select it, then tap the next, next and so on to multi-select.

I might actually use something other than Enhanced Email now.
I tried multi select by long pressing several but that was too cumbersome. I like your way much better.
