need help asap about new phone

hey guys, i got my new droid 1 today cause i have been having problems with mine not reading the sd card properly in recovery...question is, before i activate this other phone and cancel the service on the other one, do i need to unroot it first and restore it like new? or can i do that when the phone has no service?

You can restore it after, doesn't have to be active.

Although I'd personally restore the active device first and then activate the new one.
