Music player not working without headphones

Using stock music player on phone. I'm unable to listen to music in speaker mode without headphones. Is there a setting that I need to adjust or is that how the phone is set up? I just want to listen to some music as phone stands on kickstand. I don't think I'm asking for a lot.

External speaker should work. Do you hear other sounds from the speaker? Sounds like it could be an issue with the phone (hardware), maybe the headphone jack.
