making themes

can someone help point me in the right direction. I'd like to be able to make my own theme and change certain things.
I can't even find where to even start. I know how to use MM but how do I even start and input my own creations?

I know it's a dumb request and maybe I'm retarded because I can't find any tutorials on how to even basically start or anything.
