My Note 8 updated about a week ago, and has become practically useless for phone calls. I can just barely hear the caller at max volume.
I've tried several different volume boosting programs, but none have helped.
Can someone point me towards one that actually will work?

Hmmm sorry to hear it...have you tried to clean reset phone? Sometimes a clean start fixes these issues... Pain to set up new but worth a check...

I was hoping to avoid that.

I haven't used a Samsung phone in a long time so I'm not familiar with all their current pre-loaded apps. Do they have a built in Help app, with hardware test functionality? Some phones have a Help app that can test hardware features (speaker, NFC, microphone, camera flash, etc.) to help determine if problems are with the hardware itself or with software.

Maybe there are hardware test apps on the Play Store that can do this stuff.....before you drive into a Factory Reset. Good luck, hope you can get the volume working correctly.

I read about taking a brush and compressed air to clean the earpiece. Despite being skeptical, I gave it a try.
It worked. Maybe the decrease in volume wasn't as sudden as I had thought.
