Lookout???

I'm just using AVG

I've used it for years on my PCs, so I figured why not on my phone :p

and the ONLY reason I use it is because I've installed a few apps that didn't come from the Android Market; otherwise I wouldn't even bother with it

They protect against malicious apps, just like computers these phones can be infected to.

I'm still using the free trial period but I assume there's a huge difference between the free and paid (29.99) version of this app. And is this app supposed to run all the time in the notifications drop down?

Yes it runs all the time, can hide the icon though. I think the only difference is you'd loose privacy monitor...otherwise everything is the same.

uninstalled it. uses battery and resources for little benefit. From what I'm aware of this doesn't monitor ports and block attacks or anything like an antivirus on windows would do, it just tells you if the app you downloaded is ok. The only way malware is getting on your phone is by you installing it. Better solution is to not install shady apps.

I think it's worth it. It only really uses resources when you install an app and once a week when it does a scan, otherwise it doesn't really impact the phones performance. Better to be safe than sorry!

I never actually downloaded anything that was malicious and I've had several androids. Either way I downloaded this and I'm gonna keep it running for now. I read in the description that it doesn't eat battery, it takes as much battery as a 33 second phone call would for the entire day which is nothing.

You probably don't know if you d/l'd something malicious. It could be stealing data without your knowledge or outward appearances.
