Go to Menu > Settings > Location&Security settings > scroll down to security lock timer > just check when display is off ... think that should fix your problem.
If you've forgotten your lock, a Verizon person can reset it but you will lose your data.
I did see a post recently with a similar issue and it turned out that, according to the OP, since their phone was linked in to corporate email, their employer had issued a pin that all employees must use. If you think that's a possibility, I'd check with them.
