Keeping programs open in background

Is there any way to keep apps open in the background while opening another app? Like having multiple apps open and switching between them?

Yes press home and it will continue but no instantaneous switching back and forth until ice cream sandwich

Go into settings>battery & data manager>data delivery>then make sure Background Data box is checked...android has been multi tasking before apple ever knew it was an issue....I open words a movie, get a notification that a friend sent a word on words with friends and I send a word go back to watching a movie, sometimes answer texts in the middle all without anything closing-waiting for ice cream sandwich is not necessary to do what you're asking...
