Jelly Bean Texting Question

I updated to Jelly Bean last night and i don't like how texting works now. It seems that if i get a text, even if i just open the notification bar or my inbox, it marks the text message as read and un-highlights it and takes away the number 1 from my text icon. I know it's a little issue, but if i don't want to read a text right when i get it i'll forget about it. Why doesn't it wait till you read the text to mark it as read?
