Use a power widget to control that, easy....

If rooted just use adjbrightness from market to lower brightness all the way.

I use an application called Screen Filter. It's available in the Android Market for free....
I have it set on my Home Screen for quick access in case I get a text or email in the middle of the night...very easy to use.

Your phone can be dimmer than the stock settings allow. I use an app called bright control, don't know where I got it from though.
