internet from the droid to a laptop?

so i know this is possible bc i have used pdanet to get internet on my laptop
but on the droid x commercial, which is what i have it says we could put internet on any laptops using the droid alone


how does that work?
its that even true?
i neeed any possible or valid information on this

There is also a free way of doing this for free if you have a rooted phone with an app called wireless tether, im using it now with my laptop. it's on the market.
