installing VOICE problem

I have the 'Google Voice' app installed on my phone. I have tried following prompts to register the app, and after entering the pin code, the phone runs a progress bar for a little while, them opens a message window that states 'unable to verify phone number' so I'm guessing that to my dismay I'm NOT invited, and need to have an invite in order to enter my phone # via the invite to proceed with connecting and configuring the app.

Has anyone else had this happen? (Truthfully, I kinda thought that buying the Droid, and running Android, and one of the apps available through the 'Market' being "Voice" that an invite was inherent as part of the package. But although I might be slow, I'm not dead, so I'm thinkin' it must be the lack of an invite that has me stuck.)

Yes, you need an invite. And no, it doesn't come with the phone.

Google Voice is still in beta, hence the need for an invite.

It's just like when they were launching gmail.
