Honestly the percentages are only approximations by what is most likely a relatively dumb, non-learning, algorithm. Any resolution finer than 10% just further increases the level of deception you experience regarding your remaining battery charge.
If it goes from 100% to 90% or from 100% to 80% with no steps in the middle, it's more evident that the percentage is a gross approximation and not literal. If however it says "72%", then you're probably more likely to think "by gosh, I have exactly 72% battery left".
