Can you have two different apps up at the same time instead of closing one app to check on another?

Not exactly, but instead of closing one app and looking for it again in the app drawer, just long press the home button. It will bring up your recent apps. That's androids version of multi-tasking

Also, if you use the home button when exiting an app and go to another, when you return to that app, its usually where you left it. Otherwise, if you use the back button to completely exit an app, the next time you open it, it will start from the beginning. Using the suggestions from google.me also helps.
