huge numbers of worthless apps

Is anyone else sick of trudging through the huge numbers of wallpaper and lyrics and softporn apps that are flooding the marketplace site? There should be an area for this type of app.
The marketplace is becoming a trash heap for this kind of (I don't really think of them as apps) app. Something has to be done!

What category are you browsing? If I have in mind something I'd like to see if my phone can do, I use search. I almost NEVER just browse categories without an idea of where I'm going.

And, I'll try to beat someone else to it...OPEN SOURCE. ANYONE can create just about ANYTHING...

One mans trash is another's treasure. I don't ever wade through heaps of trash I find using the search very effective to get me to the app I'm looking for. Also reading the forum and knowing the name of the app helps. I usually don't even try an app unless I've heard about it here and got some good recommendations.

Right now there are over 2000 apps available and there are going to be many more. Some of them are worthless, some even malicious, but when you have this type of open platform that's what you're going to see. Just know what you want, get in there, get it, and leave.

Exactly. There's the woman's way of shopping, and then there's the man's...Haha!

Although I agree with one mans trash idea, I also agree with you. There are some plain out bs ones there. Things that absolutely nobody gives higher than 1 star and they keep making the same types of these things. They seem to come in high numbers all at once.

Although I use search a lot, I also use "just in". You will see the crap this way ;-)

I Have had trouble getting the search engine at the marketplace to cough up replies to some of my queries. Very limited filtering. I would, for instance like to search for a posted date. Nope. Looking for new postings. Is there something I am missing? It seems to allow searching on the title words only.

If I understand you correctly you want to search on a date that the app was specifically launched on? I don't think that can be done. I'd like that too actually, I'd like to know when a new app came out as part of my job around here is to do blogs on new apps. That would make my life a lot easier, so I hear you. No set up like that as of now though.

There's a page somewhere where you can put suggestions into Google for things like this. I don't have it but hopefully someone will read this and give us the link.

I agree that a better system of sorting is DEFINITELY needed. Even if you could sort by number of stars. I know that "Top paid" and "Top free" sort by rating, but it seems like when you search for specific words, they go in order or best match or something.

Isn't it rumored [Yeah, I know how we love those around here] that the market is getting an overhaul with the official launch of 2.1? I thought I read/heard that somewhere....and that you'd be able to eventually shop for apps on your computer.

Xbox Live has already been doing this for a while...Granted, their stuff is a little less varied, but it's nice to be able to type on a keyboard and click to "Download to console."

With that kind of thing working for Android, you could search on your computer [maybe even get better info on apps...videos, more than 2 screenshots?] and the app would be on your phone by the time you were done checking facebook. Ha!

Have you checked out the androidzoom.com website. You can sort by several factors (category, free vs. paid, new vs. rating vs. popular). It has helped me a lot.

I love you man. Haha! No, but seriously. Thanks! This might make things a little easier on all of us! Good looking out!

@Monty, agreed. I'd say, in this case, Android's strongest point is also its weakest.

However, I'm sure there are people who love the "junk" apps that the OP is referring to. I don't, but I imagine someone out there does, or there wouldn't be so many of them...even if the only people who like them are the ones creating them.

We just need better sorting.

I suppose it's not possible to create a Market Replacement App...? Haha!

The app market is pretty much a cluttered mess with a weak interface but i'm sure it will get fixed over time. I never understood why they don't make a nice web interface that you can search on a desktop.
