A new report suggests that the Chinese smartphone maker, Huawei, may be looking to start developing its own mobile phone operating system to rival the likes of Android, iOS, Microsoft and others. According to an interview and subsequent article by Reuters, the Chinese manufacturer is still ramping up its production of Android and Windows 8 based smartphones, and plans to aggressively compete in the global smartphone market. However, it is possible that the handset maker will develop its own mobile OS in order to distance itself from the Android ecosystem. This is supposedly because Huawei is uncomfortable with all the legal patent wars raging across the world between Apple and Android. Here's a quote from the article with a few more details,

In the fiercely contested smartphone arena, Huawei expects to ramp up its Android-focused product range with Microsoft Windows 8 phones and tablet PCs, and possibly also so-called phablets - phone/tablets. It is also considering developing its own smartphone operating system to distance itself from Android, which has been the focus of legal disputes between Apple and other major handset makers.

"Whatever consumers like, we'll develop," Wan Biao, CEO of Huawei Device, said in an interview on Monday at the company's headquarters. "We're also devoting resources into coming up with a phone operating system based on our current platform in case other companies won't let us use their system one day."

Huawei has grown its consumer devices business - which sells mobiles, tablet PCs and dongles - aggressively. Its mobiles have picked up market share, though at the expense of profitability - prompting the company to shift towards higher-end products such as its Vision and Ascend models.

It will be interesting to see if Huawei really does try and develop their own Mobile OS. That's a huge and difficult up-hill climb to undertake, especially with all of the other big name and dominant players in the market like Google, Apple and Microsoft. Regardless, competition is good, and we are looking forward to checking out all the different phones from the manufacturer.

It will be an uphill battle for sure. The biggest obstacle besides putting together a nice looking intuitive OS will be developer support (applications) I do like that they are at least going to give it a shot. Takes cajones to undertake a huge project like this, so far that I give them mad props

that's how more companies should be... do what your customers want, they are the ones who pay your bills

I do think this is a great idea. Uphill battle, thats an understatement. To develop an OS is no small task and to make both user friendly also look good without infringing on patents from apple or google might prove difficult. but if they can pull it off it would be a game changer.
