HTC has confirmed that it will be updating at least three of its Android smartphones, the Wildfire, Legend, and Desire, with Android 2.2 Froyo in Q3 of this year. Android 2.2 will offer greatly increased speed for applications and web browsing due to a brand new “virtual machine” for apps and Javascript engine for the web browser. Apps will run 2 to 5 times faster than with Android 2.1, and the web browser’s Javascript support will be 2 to 3 times faster as well. Adobe Flash 10.1 (and Air) support will be included in the update. Also HTC and Sprint have put a hold on its latest update for the EVO 4G smartphone. Last night we reported that Sprint was starting to push out an OTA update to EVO 4G users but has since pulled the software update due to handsets being turned into bricks due to failed upgrade processes.
Sprint has released this statement:
“While the vast majority of consumers successfully downloaded and installed the most recent HTC EVO 4G software update, we have received a handful of reports from customers having some issues with the update. In light of this, HTC and Sprint have decided to temporarily halt distribution of this software release until we can investigate further. We expect to be able to resume software updates shortly.”
