How to install a rom?

I'm new to this rom and rooting business. I've downloaded rom manager and have a rom in my SD card. The rom is in a zip folder and when I click install from SD it asks me a couple things. Ann I goes to install it shows a progress bar and then a warning sign and boots up like I didn't try anything.

What am I doing wrong?
