How to "Flash"

i've seen all around the site saying i need to "Flash" kernels to get them to work. im kind of new to the whole root thing, so i have no idea how to do this.

i know how to do the basic installation from the boot in recovery mode, and the nandroid backups. but i wanted to install a low voltage kernel onto the Ultimate droid rom.

can anyone explain how to "Flash Kernels" to me?
