How do I permanently delete widgets?

I want to delete Peep, the twitter widget. I don't use twitter and I don't want this widget clogging my space.

settings>applications>manage applications>select app>uninstall

it's an htc widget, it won't uninstall.

Unless you can root your phone and then install a ROM image on it without the widget....
