Handcent SMS unread counter

I installed handcent today but I want to turn off the unread counter in the notification bar. I unchecked the unread counter in the settings but it still shows the unread counter when I test the notification setting. What do I do?

I don't think there is a way to not have the icon appear in the notification bar when you get a message unless you completely disable notifications. If it's just the red number in the notification icon that bothers you and you've already unchecked it try rebooting the phone or doing a battery pull and see if that helps.
