The car dock does not seem to set a no-screen-timeout default mode. Is it necessary to manually change the settings to accomplish this or is there another way to do it?

You can try using the app screebl. Should be able to set it to keep the light on while it is in the dock. screebl is good for keeping you app lit while watching videos, web surfing, etc as well. Great app.
