Google Maps in Airplane Mode?

I am going to be upgrading to the Droid Pro...however I would like to still use my Original Moto Droid as a GPS. Any suggestions??

If you set up the navigation route before you go offline (via WiFi), it will cache it on the phone and still give you turn by turn directions even while offline. Unfortunately you can't download maps of countries like with Tom Toms, etc...

Once I upgrade, the service to that phone will be shut off (switched to my new phone). So there is really no way once that happens?

Like I said, you can use wifi to "pre-cache" the map route, but you can't download maps like on Tom Tom. No 3g, no worky...
