If you can, delete it from the email client and just use gmail. That will stop the multiple deliveries.

I was unable to delete gmail, but it was the only email client I had. I had to do a factory data reset to fix it.

If you have a replacement email app, you can just shut off the notifications from the Gmail account. That way you are only getting notifications of new mail from you replacement app. I use K-9 and have all my emails (personal, work and gmail) come to one place and I have turned off notifications from the email app and the gmail app so I only get one notification per new email.
