how do you insert emoticons in your text and email. I see them but when i insert it is only in characters....

For text messages Menu Key > Insert Smiley.

I was doing that but it only inserted the keystroke version and not the icon.

To be clear...you touch the menu button (the thing with the 3 vertical dots) and then press Insert Smiley. In the text message, prior to sending, it shows up as just characters. It does not turn into an actual emoticon until you send the message. If you review the sent text, you will see the emoticon appear as it should.
