Email app - mark as read?

I use the stock email app on my Droid for my pop3 account. I've tried K-9, and while it has a lot of nice features, I don't find the overall app as user friendly as the stock email app. My problem is that I can't mark messages as read without opening them up. For some reason, my trash folder shows that there is one unopened email in it, yet when I open the trash folder, all messages are marked as read. I even went through the process of deleting each email one by one (another annoying feature. where is my option for "delete all"?), yet the folder still has a number 1 on it suggesting there is one unopened email in it. I've gone into the app management and cleared the cache as well with no luck. Any suggestions?
