Hi all,
I have a job that is very email and IM intensive so I type just about constantly for 8.5 hours a day. I've been doing this for 7 years so a repetitive stress injury was probably inevitable, however it has come on so fast that I am not so sure it is the typing that has caused it.
I send a lot of emails and use skype chat from my phone a lot too. I got my Droid back in November and I remember describing it even back then with only one complaint: because of the direction pad on the right, it's uncomfortable to type with the physical keyboard. I've since gotten used to it, or so i tought...
in the last 6 months I've been noticing more and more pronounced pain in my right pinky finger. I read an interesting article about 'coder's pinky', which describes this particular RSI as being because when they mapped the US keyboard, they put the lesser used keys on the far right side (braces, semicolon, pipe, etc), which typical typists rarely use, but programmers use very frequently ( an example written in perl has 50% of the characters typed with the right pinky). Anyway, i was convinced that RSI just comes like a thief in the night and just because my pain didnt exist 6 months ago doesnt mean it couldn't ramp up exponentially every day.
I've been fortunate enough to take some time off work, so I thought that I would get some rest on the hands and come back with some improvement. In the time off of work I was probably banging on my droid keyboard 3x as much as usual, because I use thingns like premote to control my pc and i answer all my emails and skype chats etc on the droid itself. I went back to work and not only is my right little finger WORSE, but my LEFT pinky is starting to hurt too. I'm starting to actually lose mobility in my right pinky also.
I got to do something about this soon, because i'm already typing with 8 fingers, which results in a lot of typos (this has taken me a lot longer to write than it normally would). I was curious if anyone has noticed any discomfort in their pinkies from using the droid keyboard, or any hand discomfort just from owning the droid1. I also find myself balancing the phone on my pinky when reading in portrait mode, and it is a pretty heavy piece of hardware, so maybe over time that's wearing on me too.
if anyone has any stories please let me know
