All have similar stories...sounds like a lot of work to be a big prank.

HTC said today that it will update the GSM Hero, Sprint Hero, and Verizon Wireless DROID ERIS to the latest Android 2.1 operating system. The update will also include HTC's new Sense user interface which adds a host of new features, including improvements in social networking, multitouch, and user interface updates. HTC wasn't specific on when the updates would be available

All have similar stories...sounds like a lot of work to be a big prank.

People spend hours out in fields trying to make it look like an alien craft landed and flattened all the corn stalks. If this is a prank, it certainly wouldn't surprise me.

Are the Eris owners even able to flash ROMs? Or even 2.1 ROMs for that matter?

Son's Eris has not updated......

I do not have an eris but for different sites to point to the same thing considering one of them would have checked their sources. I am not saying it is true or false I am saying I am not surprised HTC is on their game and have an ota ready before motorola.
