Have you cleared the cache for the Playstore? If not, try that. You can also force close the Playstore to try and reset it. Personally, I would clear the cache, force close it, and then try it again.

The above assumes that the Playstore worked for you on your current phone sometime in the past.

That will clear the cache, but it will also force you to resign-in to the Playstore. Just below clear data is a clear cache button. That should clean up the miscellaneous crap running in the app.
