After Effects has a LOT of built in features that can be used to simulate things, and there are MANY free (and not free) plugins out there that have many functions.
For example, one that stuck out to me in this video was the water droplets. I bet you could do something like that using the Particle World tool, or Trapcode's Particular. You should be able to take an image, specify that is a particle, and then use one of those particle tools to create a bunch of particles floating in free space with some slight gravity, so they're moving a little downward.
