Do I need to 'Safely Remove Hardware'? Or just pull the plug?

How do you: Disconnect the Droid from the pc when just charging or disk mounted..?

Nowhere in the manual does it say you need to use the Windows System Tray applet "Safely Remove Hardware". But my Droid Inc shows up there.

Do I need to first tell my pc to Safely Remove Hardware for the Droid? Then, if I have the disk mounted, unmount it, then unplug it?

Or can I just pull the plug anytime I want, like I have been for the past two months??

(I have been just pulling the plug on my external drive, and it just died this weekend from bad sectors, so now I am being more cautious.)

I once accidentally yanked the usb out from my comp when my phone was in disk drive mode...I lost everything on my sd. irreplaceable pictures and vids

What I do religiously now is before I unplug the phone I switch the phone to charging only then pul the plug...never had a problem since. but accidents do happen so I back up my sd now

I've always just pulled the cord out of phone and have never had a problem but having said that after reading this thread I will probably start switching to charge only before pulling plug! It appears from my experience that its hard to cause a problem by just pulling the cord from the phone but you never can be sure!

I always unmount anything I disconnect from the computer. DH burned thru six Ipods in six months by not unmounting :icon_eek: them.

So, we don't need to use the 'Safely Remove Hardware' applet...

If you're disk is mounted, unmounting it from the phone will safely remove it I assume.

And if I am in Charge Only mode, I can just pull the plug? I don't need to Safely Remove Hardware in that case either I guess?

I always unmount anything too - usb can be a little too flaky to trust the "just yank" method. If something shows up in the list of things to dismount, I dismount it before yanking. Also, I'd rather unmount from the pc as opposed as to from Android, though I've done it both ways.

In theory, you can just yank it if it isn't busy. And you may be able to get away with that forever. But I doubt it. ;)

I just click the USB off on the phone and pull it.

Since college everyone has said to ALWAYS UNMOUNT on the computer... however I have never unmounted any device in the past. Thumb drives, USB drives, hard drives, and phones. I never had an issue as long as nothing was transferring...

i have accidentally unplugged without unmounting a handful of times and most times it didn't cause any issues... but there was one time i did it and the sd card could no longer be mounted... tried everything

i didn't lose anything (luckily), but it was a headache - had to get a reader, copy everything (10gb or so) to my computer, format it, and copied the essential stuff back, then it mounted fine...
