ok so I want to install linux but I have a few questions

first of all I am planning on installing ubuntu version of linux

so my questions are

1. Is there a standard linux os like the original linux not like ubuntu or fedora?

2. will programs for fedora work for ubuntu and vice versa

thats it

but my main question is the different versions of linux, like is there 1 actual linux that I can download or is linux just the basis for all those different os

They are all Linux.
There are many differences between them though.
The main ones are the way software is installed and what software versions are available to install.
Ubuntu uses Debian packages for installing software and Fedora uses rpms.
You can run a live cd to see how it will run on your computer.
This way you can make sure it will work with your hardware.

A boot manager should pop up and give you your choice.
