Can I ask for a favor when you have a moment, check your bill and check the data usage. How many of you are having data being used in the middle of night. I have recently noticed this and have been wondering what its all about. Its not consisted nor is it every night, can start from mid-night and go all the way to 8 in the morning with-out the phone being touch. No emails or texts coming in and I just recently downloaded the task killer and ran it before bed and still saw data being used. The amount range from 4kb to 1500kb. What can it be from???

:welcome: to the Droid Forum. Many apps require permission to access the internet. That would be my guess.

I do...im not worried about the data usage for billing. My wife thinks I go online at the middle of the night and surfs the web. Wanted to get proof from others that this is a normal thing unless something is up with my phone.

My guess was the same. Any others that have access to check there bill to let me know if there having the same issue - if its normal.

SMS/MMS/GMAIL are push, so we can rule those three out.

Email is pull, so even though you might not get any, it still has to poll the servers.

News/Weather widget is pull and a standard app unless you turn it off.

Syncing Contacts, Book Marks, and the rest of the default OS stuff requires pushing and pulling.

Market update checking is pull.

Facebook, Twitter and programs of that nature are pull.

LastFM can sycn contacts, so there is another pull source.

As you can see, and I have only scratched the surface, there is a bunch of apps that can pull data on a regular basis. I would need to see a list of every app you have installed to properly tell you what programs can pull data.

I would guess Android Market is a huge culprit. I usually wake up to find updates waiting, and the only way would be for my Droid to have gone out and checked the marketplace for updates.

But as others have said... unless you use some type of task killer that completely shuts down apps, there's a good chance many of them are polling for data throughout the night.

I have been using a task killer and I did run it last night and found that this morning on my bill I had usage starting from 1am 2am 3am and 4am.

If you have a moment can you check your bill (under data usage) and check to see if you have data flowing at the middle of the night.....here is the other question...why is it that some days there is no data flowing and some there are. so it doesn't happen every night. But when it does there are 5 to 7 data flow at AM times.

Task killers don't shut down everything. Some programs install themselves right at the startup point. I run a task killer regularly, but the marketplace still polls to update, just as one example.

The only way I think you would truly kill random data usage would be to put your phone into airplane mode at night. But that shuts off the phone as well.

Also just happened to think about this... just like the 2.2 update is being released mostly at night due to lower server loads... I would guess that most programs, if they have to connect for updates would probably do so at night when server and bandwidth loads are typically lighter.

I also have been having this problem. Like you said in a later post, I am just curious; I am not really worried about data usage. My phone uses data throughout the night, and it also used data when I am in my house using Wi-Fi. I have been trying to find the culprit for some time now, trolling forums and everything. I was going to start a new thread but I found this one and figured I would post here and see if it gets me anywhere. Here are some examples of my problem:

08/25/2010 7:30 PM UNLIMITED MEGABYTE ALLOW - 2428.32 KB
08/25/2010 6:15 PM UNLIMITED MEGABYTE ALLOW - 2075.96 KB
^^ Definitely Connected to Wi-Fi ^^

08/25/2010 12:34 AM UNLIMITED MEGABYTE ALLOW - 2286.04 KB
08/23/2010 12:26 AM UNLIMITED MEGABYTE ALLOW - 9933.85 KB
^^ Definitely Asleep ^^

08/24/2010 6:05 PM UNLIMITED MEGABYTE ALLOW - 1666.98 KB
08/22/2010 9:15 PM UNLIMITED MEGABYTE ALLOW - 40143.68 KB
^^ Definitely Connected to Wi-Fi ^^

Like I said before the actual usage doesn't really bother me (I realize that 1-5 Mb isn’t that much), well that one right above on 8/22 kind of irks me just a bit. 40 Mb when I am connected to Wi-Fi?

My guess is that some apps use 3g regardless if I am connected to a Wi-Fi source? Is this assumption correct? The only apps I have installed are, Dolphin Browser HD, DroidLight, Maps, My Verizon Moblie, NFL Mobile, Spareparts, and Pandora.

Is there an app that tells me what app is using the data and how much it is using?

One more thing... if I type *#*#4636#*#* on the dialer (or go into spare parts), under battery history, network usage, filter by total in all time, there is one app or service or whatever they are that is using way more network usage than any other items. It is something called 1013, and when I click on it, it just takes me back to the screen before (just like the back button). The second most used item in the network usage is Dolphin HD, which is what I figured would be the highest, but this 1013 item has used more than 15-20 times more battery for “network usage” than the Dolphin HD browser.

Why not let her keep your phone overnight? Then show her the bill for the nights she kept it for proof that data can be used when the phone isn't.

I use a Program Called Smoda Widget, free on the market. It turns 3g data off, save battery. Dont know if this will help.
