So I'm attempting to modify some .png's from the UD 8 ROM.

This all went well in my head as these were my steps.

1. Downloaded the update.zip
2. Extracted.
3. Opened up framework.res and modified a few png's
4. Opened up Helix.apk, renamed to Helix.zip, extracted Helix.zip to it's own folder, Modified a few png's, zipped back up to Helix.zip, renamed to Helix.apk.
5. Zipped whole update folder back to update.zip
6. Transfered to SD Card
7. Rebooted into sprecovery and tried to install the update.zip and the installation gets aborted.

Is the process that I am using incorrect? am i missing some steps here?

All I can think of is possibly the compression of your new zip is wrong. Compression should be set to store.

use 7zip to open your APK and drag and drop from it. no need to rename the apk to a zip

Trying that right now. My compression wasn't set to store.

are you extracting the zip file?

open update.zip with 7zip actually uninstall winzip or what ever you were using because 7zip > any other zip program....
navigate to the file you want to change
drag and drop it to your desktop
make the change to the file
drag it back into the open 7zip program
click yes to overwrite the file
close 7zip

if that doesn't work I have no idea as I haven't actually done this to a update.zip but I have done that method with APK's

7zip is now officially one of my favorite programs. I love that you don't even have to unzip the zip file to access every file inside it as well as deleting and replacing.

Worked out perfect for me.

Thanks for the tip Flomaster!
