current method of rooting, install roms??

i think i'm ready to take the plunge. i've been doing searches, and have found a lot of videos and links and... i just want to make sure i'm doing it according to the most current/appropriate method. sorry for what is most likely a repetitive request, but could someone point me in the direction of rooting and installing custom roms and froyo? any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Flash the 2.1 SPRecovery SBF, find the ROM you want, name it to update.zip (shouldn't be update.zip.zip) put it on your SD card, boot into recovery, wipe data/cache, allow update.zip, install update.zip

Yes just choose an updated rom to install instead of the given link for step 2.
