Creating Icons for Use

I tried doing a search but couldn't find anything, so I figured I would ask on here in case anyone would know. Is there a special way in whch you have to have things saved in order to use them as icons? Specifically, I know with LauncherPro you can set up anything as a shortcut icon, and I have tried to set up a couple pictures I have taken with my Droid as the App Drawer icon, but it never works.

Any help would be much appreciated.

60x60 interlaced .png images work for me. That might be the standard, I'm not sure. I've noticed the image files in several icon packs formatted that way.
