Changing Default App Icons

Is there a simple way to replacing the default icons from a theme with a different one?

I dig the Droid X theme, but honestly, I'd rather use the default icons, or maybe even the Sense UI ones. DX's icons look too cartoony for my taste

But that means I'll lose the framework for menu boxes and the status bar. Its only the icons I don't like. I was thinking of just removing the apps via terminal, then pushing the same app back to the phone from another theme.

but I wanted some feedback to hopefully avoid unnecessary headaches and/or Motorola logo hanging.

I would like to know how to do this as well, i am running the smoked glass theme with droid x icons but i really don't like the gmail icon with it and would love to change it back to the stock gmail icon.
