I'm still not sure of the answer regarding plugging my phone to the tv. Is there no way to view videos or listen to music doing this?
can you advise?

No on the video. Droid hardware does not support video output to another device.
Audio:
Yes and No depending on the TV. I personally have a headphone jack with 2 male ends and I plug one into my Droid and the other into my AUX headphone input on my TV. You can do this with a car stereo too if you have an AUX headphone input.
Another thing you could do is get a cord with a male headphone end and an RCA audio (red/white) on the other end. This way you can plug the audio RCA into a TV or a stereo receiver input.
