Can my old Droid get wifi signal?

I am switching my phone from Droid X to something new one (probably Droid Charge..) soon.
After I switched, my old Droid can be used for checking email or surfing web within Wifi area?
Since my Droid will soon end its contract, I want to give it to my friend who just wants to have it as a web checking device.

I would appreciate any advice you could give me.
Thanks in advance.

Yes that is possible, just was doing it with my OG Droid today. Just put in airplane mode, then turn on wifi.

I upgraded from the OG Droid to the Droid 3 and I kept the OG Droid.

I set it to Airplane mode, then turned on WiFi. The helps battery life since the Droid no longer seeks a 'phone' service.

I update apps from the App Market, download books for the ereader, stream music from the cloud, download games, etc.

With only WiFi, this is a handy, little wifi device.
